The Story goes like this.When they were conducting experiments in connection with the first Telstar satellites , Penzias and Wilson of the Bell laboratories found that there was to an excess of radio noise that seemed to be coming from the sky in a completely isotropic manner( same in all directions).Their inital guess was that pigeon shit on the telescope could be causing this.But on checking , the found nothing. Meaning , the noise was coming from the sky itself.On consulting with researchers in MIT, they realized that they had stumbled upon the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation which was predicted in the 1940's but had not been detected as yet.The discovery fetched them the Nobel Prize in 1978.
6. The Image is that of comet ShoeMaker -Levy 9 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
7.The Stamp was released by the erstwhile Soviet Union to commemorate the imaging of the far side of the moon for the first time ever.
8.In all the images the phenomenon of Gravitational lensing is being seen.The central object bends light that comes from a distant object and the outcome is multiple images of the background objects, arcs..
9.Galileo was seeing Saturn with a low resolution telescope and it so happened that Saturn's Rings were Edge-On ( plane of the Rings perpendicular to the line of sight) which is why he saw the rings as two unresolved blobs. Later when the Rings became Face-On , he could see them clearly.
10.The image is of Jupiter by the Spacecraft Galileo.Jupiter is eclipsing the sun hence higlighting the rings clearly...Apart from Saturn, Jupiter ,Uranus and Neptune also have Rings.
