Would you like to talk to someone about.... The Students’ Support Network (SSN) at IISc functions to help fellow students cope with the emotional pressures and demands that life in the competitive IISc environment may entail. SSN team members provide supportive listening to the issues students are facing in a non-judgmental environment and referrals would be made to Prof.Nalini, an eminent social counsellor if the situation so arises. The confidentiality of the communications and the identities of students who get in touch with SSN is respected and maintained as a strict rule. Some of the activities planned for the academic year 2011-12 are : · A vast majority of the students are unaware of the presence of the SSN and an active counseling and support cell in the institute. Providing awareness about SSN activities and the availability of the services of Prof. Nalini, the officially appointed counselor of the Centre for Counseling and Support, is foremost in the SSN agenda. · Establishing a network of peer counselors in each department who would reach out to students and steer SSN activities in their respective departments. · Initiating the online counseling interface and peer counseling chat room, work on which was started last year. The online chat tool would be helpful for students who want to share issues they may be facing, but do not want to reveal their identity to SSN members. · Holding De-stressing workshops, talks and discussion groups on stress management relevant to the IISc student community are also among the activities planned.
