Divisions - Interdisciplinary Research

Interdisciplinary research has emerged as a crucial part of the research landscape in recent years. By breaking down departmental barriers, interdisciplinary research facilitates novel breakthroughs that may not be possible within the confines of a particular discipline. The Division of Interdisciplinary Research has a wide range of Departments/Centres with the common theme of a strong interdisciplinary focus.

The Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering (BSSE) was founded in June 2015 as a new academic entity in IISc. It has an interdisciplinary PhD programme. Its research focus is on using engineering principles to understand biology from molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and biological systems; develop biomedical devices and technology for the elderly; and pursue an integrated approach to tackle diabetes. BSSE works with clin icians, hospitals, and biomedical industry in achieving its goals.

The Centre for Contemporary Studies (CCS) endeavours to bring to the campus some of the best practitioners of different disciplines in the human sciences, such as philosophy, sociology, economics, law, literature, poetry, art, music, cinema etc. These scholars, drawn from all over the world, visit and lecture at the Institute and some are in residence for periods ranging from a few days to several months

The Centre for infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urb an Planning (CiSTUP) was established in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka. The mandate and vision of CiSTUP is to produce knowledge that addresses the unique urban issues specifically on sustainable urban transportation along with o ther related topics of infrastructure and urban planning.

Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) is an interdisciplinary research centre with a focus on nanoscale materials, devices and systems. A state-of-the art nanofabrication facility with a clean room and several characterisation facilities at CeNSE compare with the best in the world.

Department of Computational and Data Sciences (CDS) is a new interdisciplinary department focusing on the research areas of mathematical computing, computational science, and computer systems. The department faculty work on computational science and their application to scientific domains, the design, implementation and evaluation of high performance and scalable computer systems, and in the advanced areas of data science and engineering.

Department of Management Studies is one of the oldest management schools in the country. The department pursues applied and fundamental research in areas such as economics, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource management, intellectual property, marketing, optimization, public policy and demand management.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER) works on research and developmental problems in energy.

Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber Physical Systems aims to engage in applied research on Cyber Physical Systems, an emerging interdisciplinary area that brings together advances in distributed sensing, wireless communication, networking, computing, controlling physical devices, algorithms, and other allied technologies.

Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (SERC) carries out research in computer systems, computational science and bioinformatics. It has one of the best computing facilities in the country. In addition, SERC has stimulated the rapid growth of computer-based research, development, and training at the Institute.
